Risk of Pore Water Hydrogen Sulfide Toxicity in Dredged Material Bioassays
نویسندگان
چکیده
ISSUE: In the past, hydrogen sulfide has not been treated as a contaminant of concern; but because it can exert toxicity effects, based on whole sediment and elutriate toxicity tests, the potential of hydrogen sulfide toxicity was evaluated. RESEARCH: To evaluate the potential of hydrogen sulfide toxicity in dredged material bioassays, a literature review and survey were conducted. Data collected included pore water exposure concentrations and effects concentrations of laboratory studies. SUMMARY: The comparison of reported exposure and effects concentrations suggests a strong potential for hydrogen sulfide toxicity in dredged material bioasssays. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) performs routine maintenance dredging of federal navigation channels. Prior to dredging, an evaluation of the dredged material may be needed to determine the best management alternative. A dredging evaluation involves chemical and biological analysis to determine the potential impacts of the dredged material in both the water column during placement and ...
متن کامل4 Bioassays as a tool for the assessment of the quality of dredged material
The application of bioassays for the assessment of dredged material is advised by the dredged material management guidelines of international conventions (chapter D 4.2). However, on a national level the implementation of bioassays for the purpose of dredged material management is still under development. In the Netherlands a number of bioassays are evaluated and their implementation is schedul...
متن کاملRemediation of coastal marine sediments using granulated coal ash.
It is very important to reduce phosphorus flux from sediment as well as cutting down terrigenous loads in order to control eutrophication in semi-enclosed coastal seas. Hydrogen sulfide is also a noxious substance which is highly toxic and fatal to benthic organisms. The purpose of this study is to evaluate remediation efficiency of organically enriched sediments using granulated coal ash (GCA)...

متن کاملInvestigation of hydrogen sulfide adsorption in metallic scaffold MOF-5 nanocomposite based on activated carbon for the use of respiratory mask cartridge
Introduction: Hydrogen sulfide is one of the most important impurities in natural gas. Due to the fact that this gas is hazardous, toxic, corrosive and volatile, therefore, the removal of hydrogen sulfide has been studied using several methods. One of the most known procedures is the adsorption process. In the present study, activated carbon and activated carbon-based composite scaffolds (MOF-5...
